In the past 20 years, “the Centre Méditerranéen de l’Environnement” has become a leading force in raising public awareness of major natural hazards.
Inform and educate
The association has taken part in the emergence of « hazard awareness » through activities and programmes aimed at young people and at the wider public. It has also produced training courses for professionals in both the public and private sectors, and organised Euro-Mediterranean work camps for students and young professionals.
These activities rely on a variety of teaching materials (exhibitions, role-play games, simulation exercises, films, CD-ROMs, etc.) put together over time, as local partners have expressed their needs and expectations.
Assisting public authorities
The CME also uses its capacities to assist local authorities and government services in their prevention programmes.
A Euro-Mediterranean network
Since 1997, the CME has built a strong partnership with other countries of the Mediterranean region, such as Spain, Italy, Greece and the North-African countries. Experience and skills in the area of natural hazard prevention are shared in the context of interregional cooperation programmes.
